Kwe' KMK,

Just dropping you a line to inform you that Ellen Hunt tested DNA European, Haplogroup "H". She has no genealogical records indicating Aboriginal Ancestry as she has been denied application for INAC Status by the Federation of Newfoundland Indians. If I was going around disturbing the Whiteman making these claims as a proven Amerindian DNA Woman with Status your organization along with joe. b. marshall & mud julian & the 13 chiefs would take it upon yourselves to contact government & the media about any legitimate claims which I have made in the past in hope of embarassing & wounding me in your hatred towards me. just think, Daniel Paul supports this non-proven Mi'kmaq from Nfld as he sits on a mi'kmaq burial restoration board registered with provincial joint stocks & they receive funding from government agencies when the true Mi'kmaq remain in a state of anomie which results in alcoholism & suicide amongst our Tribe. I rely on my information from other board member who is disturbed about the manner in which Ms. Hunt portrays herself as a Spiritual Leader and the way she disperses Society Cheques written to her husband, Winston Hunt, under a false guise. The woman was born out of province & making false claims which reflect on the integrity & honor of the MicMac whom must co-exist on this land with others. Native Council of NS are riddled with this type of false representation. I trust that you shall notify your Chiefs of this outside intrusion to Mi'kma'ki. My advice to your organization is if you all claim to be leaders - then Clean It Up! I intend on raising this issue at a public forum in the near future about what the Made in NS Process is really conducting it's business format land to with whom the Tri-partite are involved. We, The Mi'kmaq Women have to live amongst the British and Ms. Hunt's free ride is nothing but short of a mockery of our people, whom are continually suffering hardships to this day - at the expense of others.

I post the below email as I am deeply disturbed about Ellen Hunt claiming to be a Mi'kmaq Linguist by offering Mi'kmaq Language Lessons a fee of $100.00 as the email indicates. An Elder once told me that without a Language - there are no People! This is a mockery of an Ancient People.

I have not revealed the idenity of the sender which provided this email to me out of fear of reprisal to the senders. I shall reveal my source when ordered by a court of competent jurisdiction or I shall release the name of original sender if requested by this Forum's moderator.

I ask that all L'nu make an offering to the Ancestors in the Spirit World, whom gave their Lives for us to be here today, to give me strength & guidance in my determination to eradicate this type of abuse from the part of Turtle Island known as Mi'kma'ki in the best interst of all Mi'kmaq yet to be born.

I remain a Warrior in my Heart - for my People, my Language & my Land. - m'sit nogamah, - Sagama'sgw TTT

Thought I'd let you know that from Sept.-Dec. ($100.00) there will be Mi'kmaq Language classes being offered at the MARC....instructor:  Ellen Hunt.

Yes, it is in the Recreational Guide for the Fall sessions.

To quote the first author, apukjij, of this topic on Mi'kmaq Burial Grounds Rearch & Restoration Association:

"can anyone help identify this Ellen Hunt, president of the Mi’kmaq Burial Grounds Research & Restoration Association  obviously a "acadian-micmac-metis" who is passing her self off as a Mi'kmaq Elder and recieving funds from an unsuppecting municipal representative for a acadian-micmac festival featuring:" arts and crafts demonstrations, storytelling, workshops, Mi'Kmaq spiritual ceremonies and traditional music". shouldnt that money go to burial restoration and research projects?" nobody i know seems to know of her."

I must agree that "shouldnt that money go to burial restoration and research projects?"

I made application to President Ellen Hunt 4 seasons ago to assist me in the repatriation of my mtDNA Alkonquian Ancestor, Demasduit's Skull from Scotland. However, the Association receives monies from Federal & provincial Governments under the guise they are restoring Burials. To date I have had no support from the Association.

Posted below is a partial copy of my application to the Mi'kmaq Burial Grounds Rearch & Restoration Association:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last year, I had my mtDNA tested by Family Tree DNA at Houston Texas and the results came back Haplogroup "C"  - Amerindian.

I have an exact mtDNA match to Demasduit, also known as Mary March - Beothuk.

Even though my mtDNA match runs through my Maternal line, it didn't surprise me at all because I have another Aboriginal connection to Newfoundland.  My Mother's father was Joe Toney, son of Santu, who claimed to be Beothuk through her father "Kop"; as documented by Anthropologist - Dr. Frank Speck and published in the Book - The Beothuk and the Micmac.

Demasduit was certainly of Algonkian stock, and her family's ancestral homeland was Newfoundland.  The Beothuk, as documented by historians of Newfoundland, believed they  "Sprang from an arrow, stuck in the sand".  Amerindian creation stories vary from Tribe to Tribe, oral tradition has influenced the unique burial customs of all Algonkian people.  The "dead" have a fundamental right to receive the customary last rites, and have their remains left in peace as dictated by tribal custom.

In Aboriginal Society, Customary Law supports the fact that the removal of our ancestors remains from their final resting place that there will be no spiritual peace until the dead are returned to the place of their birth and receive their last rites in accordance with Algonkian tradition and custom.

Now, we must ask ourselves: Who owns these remains?

Certainly under British common law, ... no-one owns human remains. They are un-ownable. They are not real estate, they’re not personal property, they are not owned. But there are people identified, that have both rights and responsibilities to deal with them. And those are generally the next of kin. And that’s the system that has been in effect in all of the British colonies.

Mitochondrial analysis is useful in determining unclear identities, such as those of missing persons when a maternally linked relative can be found.  If an ancient female's mtDNA is known, and it matches known mtDNA for someone living today, then we know with certainty that the ancient female is related on their maternal side.

Aboriginal people today, therefore, feel deeply obligated to their ancestors to both protect and defend those rights with respect to their remains, and hence our demand that institutions return such remains to our communities for (re) burial.  We must take into consideration the sacred relationship between Mother Earth and the Aboriginal of North America.

This concern is sufficient universiality among indigenous people to warrant inclusion in the United Nations Draft Declaration of Principles for Indigenous Rights of 1985, Article 11 of which reads:
Indigenous nations and people continue to own and control their material culture, including archaeological, historical and sacred sites, artifacts, designs, knowledge and works of art. They have the right to regain items of major cultural significance and, in all cases, to the return of the human remains of their ancestors for burial in accordance with tradition.

The use of the word “return” clearly implies that human remains are to be returned to present day indigenous people who have an established prior connection to the human remains in question.

I have spoken with Donna Augustine, whom has dedicated her life to the repatriation of indigenous remains, and she suggested I contact you regarding supporting the Repatriation of Demasduit's skull which is in a Museum at Scotland.

Attached for your information is a copy of my mtDNA, under the name of my Registered Indian Status at INAC, as well as, a link to Demasduit's mtDNA results.  http://www.isogg.org/ancientdna.htm

I have also attached a picture of 4 living generations of identical mtDNA to Demasduit.  The picture displays, from left to right, my daughter - Bronwen 1986,  Ardy 1951, my Mother - Ivy Landry nee Toney 1924 and my Granddaughter - Lila 2008.  It is of the utmost importance that we accomplish this task before the passing of my mother, who was born in a wigwam and has seen upwards of 1000 moons.

I ask for the support of the Mi’kmaq Burial Grounds Research & Restoration Association to participate in opening dialogue with Scotland, to make application to their Museum;  in our quest to have Demasduit's skull repatriated to Red Indian Lake for reburial, as it was the original location of my maternal ancestor - Demasduit's resting place;  with the rest of her bones and where her son is buried.

I feel great honor to do the job for free as I exercise Mi'kmaq Sovereignty throughout our Ancestral Lands and I have no agreements with any Whiteman government. I'm the Real deal!

Native Council of Nova Scotia are riddled with this type of false representation. The Chiefs must be made aware of this outside intrusion to Mi'kma'ki.

I agree there is a problem when people who aren't members of an indigenous Nation presents themselves as if they are and as if they have a right to make desicions on issues which concern indigenous peoples.

I don't want to pull this off topic, so I have started a thread asking about you and the First Nation you appear to be claiming to represent.

Right on Moma_porcupine - you're right on top of things. I like that. In the exercise of my Title as Clan Mother & Chief. I am open to public criticism & scrutiny. Comes with the Territory. I am not above the Laws & Standards which I hold others to. I have DNA proof & INAC Status.  I am a MicMac Treaty Indian. I'm the Real deal! I do not hide my name moma_porcupine. I was a member of Annapolis Valley First Nation Indian Reservation #32 & I left the Indian & Northern Affairs Canada Band because of all the corruption & the fact my Treaty Rights are not for sale. My name is entered on the INAC General List Atlantic Region. I am not a Fraud - I am for Truth & Justice. Anything you may have heard about me is True!  Ask CMM, UNSI, NCNS & KMK?  I do not belong to a Band, First Nation, Organization or to any other Splinter Group. I was born to the Tribe of MicMac ... I shall pass on a member of the Tribe of MicMac ...
