I think the confusion here is that these are two different John Sanchez's being discussed.

One is John Sanchez, Yankton Sioux tribal member and the other is John Sanchez, Sho-Ban/Ute who lives in Oregon and whose sister Tawna Sanchez is an Oregon state legislator (http://www.tawnasanchez.com).

The latter, Oregon-based Sanchez is the one associated with the Mount Hood Sundance as is his sister.

 The Sho-Ban Sanchez may be the one who stole some ceremonial items from the late Julius Murray, a Ute spiritual man who passed away 16-17 years ago. His family has recovered some items, but they also want the pipe back that he stole from the old man and Sanchez apparently refuses to return it.
