Last time I was in the area, my old friends thought I was a freak for recognizing that all the squid on the beach at cowls (steamer lane) during winter was an actual food supply. ;)
I got a kick out of seeing the wharf in the news recently.

If anyone wants me to explain how genetics works to achieve this, or how most natives prior to contact had similar features I'd be happy to.
Wheeler's survey wasn't a great start in thr eyes of the government, wheeler had married a daughter of the chief and brought her back to Washington DC. His testimony to congressional hearings is why they were declared non-Indian. It was later with a different leadership that the Buffalo Soldiers were brought in to subdue the tribe enough for religious leaders to finish the job.
Women and children were left to fend for themselves after the men were hauled off to Alcatraz.
