Does anyone know the origin and history of the word squaw?

This is a bastardization of the Nehiyaw (Cree) word for woman, Esquew.  I am not sure if other languages had similar Respectful terms for woman, but it was always my understanding that this term was meant to belittle our language and our Respect for Women.
