Title: Possible Fraud Alert - Raymond White Bear
Post by: cowlishaw on July 28, 2005, 10:32:50 pm
I came across a broshure here in the Cedar City public library, on a bulliten board, and removed it. According to the broshure, Raymond White Bear is a Reiki Master, Lakota Elder, Teacher, Ordained Minister, Native Healer, and "Shaman!"

Quoted from the broshure:

"The Deseret News calls him the "New Age Native, and the "Alternative Medicine MAn." This Indian is a former rodeo cowboy, championship boxer, Sundancer, and survival instructor... By blending the shamanic traditions of his Lakota Ancestors with the healing ways of Asia, he has created a new path of balance and wholeness... White Bear teaches a reverence for the Earth and the Sky, and that in order to be whole, a person should understand and acknowledge their connection to the world."

"White Bear can be contacted to arrange various ceremonies, including;

~Blessings
~Weddings
~Vision Quests
~Healings
~Sweat Lodge
~Cleansings
~Rites of Divorcement
~Stress Reduction
~Rites of Passage

Times may be also arranged to receive individual or group instruction in;

~Wilderness Living Skills
~Native Lore and Stories
~Reiki Attunments
~Spiritual Living Practaces
~"Chanupa" (the way of the pipe)

...Such things as payment will be arranged on an individual basis, dependant upon services rendered and a persons ability to pay. (although White Bear has stated that he is perfectly willing to accept payment in horses and buffalo robes, just like his fathers before him!)

Well, What do you think? It's obvious to me!

Obvious to me too. The guy admits he's taking a lot from Asian ideas, which makes him more honest than most exploiters. The good news is that he just started doing this, and doesn't seem to have much luck so far. No sign of him elsewhere on the web, either under White Bear or his real name of Mendenhall. You could write to the Deseret News and point out they are promoting exploitation.

Well,
Is he a Lakota Elder?  Probably not. If he has been trained in the rest, then saying so is not fraudulent. Most wishing to teach the public at large use the term Shaman because it is the most well known.  However, he will have to deal with spiritual repercussions for any wrong actions.  Sounds like another Swiftdeer to me. Be careful tearing down public posted notices. Even if you are right to do so, you may get negative attention, and only bolster a fraud’s interest group.  Good luck, like I say, sounds like a Swiftdeer to me.

Greetings everyone,
I hope I am not coming off as being over cautious.  Do we have a 'how-to' paper covering how to go about busting a fraud?  I know great advice is given by all here when someone is going to intervene, but is there a 'best-practices' type way of going about where the person doing it can benefit from the lists great experience?
