Spirit Dance Healing Center
« on: July 11, 2008, 06:55:04 pm »
I came across these guys while lookin' around on Youtube.  They have a drum making video, frame making video and a sample video of one of their "Native American Awareness Ministries".

You can view the Native American Awareness Ministry service sample at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzvHtfXaZSw

It's a center for spiritual healing run by a woman named Cathy Flinn in Westminster, Maryland.  The pictures on the website seem to show that it's set up like a Christian Church, but it incorporates other things such as Reiki.  They also do drum making and drum circles to promote cultural unity.  All that stuff I don't have a problem with, but the sample of the Native American Awareness Ministry has samples of Lakota prayer music and other things sung by Cathy and someone else.  The Native American Awareness Ministry is a specific service (one of many multicultural events/programs) sold on their website.

the rate for the event is here:

Some of the other services seem questionable as well, but the Native American Awareness Ministry and the youtube video that goes along with it suggests strongly that she's using Lakota Spirituality as a basis for selling services.

Just wanted to see what you all thought of Cathy Flinn or if her name has possibly shown up here before.

Apparently this music is also incorporated into a promotional CD.  Cathy also runs online prayer circles and other things since 1998 when she opened her center.

aaaaaawwwwwwwww, man! Dang! All the videos are no longer available on those sites! Sheesh! There are a couple of stills on the sites of the opening of her video where a white woman in a native-like gown is seen with a drum stick in her hand and a hand drum in another.
Like the Lakota need another white woman singing Lakota christian songs to them dressed up like one of them. Man! Where do these idiots grow? Under rocks? Are they all dressed up like those cool slugs and worms that mind their own business and don't try to exploit others? If we roll over enough stones in the world and spray industrial strength disinfectant on the spot where they'd been sitting, do you think it would help?
Hopefully, it was your post here that encouraged that idiot to pull down her videos. Thanks! Keep up the good work!

Yeah seems like the vids were pulled.  From what I could gather this seemed more like a case of someone who just didn't seem to know it was a bad idea to do so.  Most everything she has on her site I don't personally have a problem with.  It was just the youtube vid and it's inclusion of one song in particular I've heard sung in sweats before that raised a little alarm with me.  I don't think Cathy's a fraud or a plastic shaman...I think she's probably a well-meaning person who learned a few bad habits from the frauds and plastic shamans.  The prices on her site for the workshops she offers are a downright steal compared to what we usually see here so I didn't see it as a get rich scheme.

Hopefully somebody did clue her in to this place and she might learn a little bit about recording sacred music and using it to sell services.

I think you're right that she's probably naive and doesn't know much.

http://www.spiritdancehealingcenter.com/CathysBio.html
"SpiritDanceĀ® Healing Center was founded by Cathy Flinn in 1998 to improve life and share wisdom through activities which educate and bring empowerment through God-given resources."

Always funny how supposed super spirchul people make sure to copyright anything and everything..

"Cathy has met with three near-death experiences, placing her on a path of healing and awakening in her a recognition of the Divine. This path has led her into the sacred realm of energy, vision, storytelling and metaphor. She is a recognized teacher of American Indian culture, a nationally known drum making craft master, drum circle facilitator, and a traditional Usui Reiki Master Teacher."

It could be she is something like exploiter Scarlet McKinney, who imagines that almost dying somehow "entitles" her to do anything.

I don't see that "recognition" for her from anyone except client.

"Her books include Sacred Metaphors: Embracing the Myth and Gifts of the Heart. Cathy's articles have appeared in The South Carroll News and Health Magazine"

She's bragging about articles in the local paper?

"Some of her favorite books are:
Anatomy of the Spirit by Carolyn Myss, PhD
Fools Crow, Wisdom and Power by Thomas E. Mails
The Four Agreements, a Toltec Wisdom Book by Don Miguel Ruiz
Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thich Nhat Hanh
Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom by Christiane Northrup, MD"

If she falls for Thomas Mails, she couldn't know too much about NDN traditions. Even more so if she fell for an obvious fraud like Ruiz.

But some things she's doing are a bit more disturbing.

When a group builds a drum together, each person has the opportunity to participate in the ceremony of life. This workshop honors the traditions associated with making and dedicating your drum, and it is a great team building experience! Everyone participates in the meditation, music, fun, storytelling and drum making. As everyone is personally involved in the drum's construction, it is the official drum of the group and can be used in any way the group desires. It can be used for prayer, ceremony, meditation, celebration and decor. A great drum table when not in use, the drum and stand may be used as a glass-topped table in the home, corporate meeting room or activities center, and it makes a great conversation piece! Making a council drum encourages teamwork, problem solving and communication and it builds community and interpersonal relationships. Both corporate or small groups benefit from the team building experience!

.....Deposit for family council drum making workshop at SpiritDance Center:

$850.00 (non-refundable)*

(The remaining $850.00 is due at beginning of workshop.)

Price includes 2 days' materials preparation BEFORE the workshop.

Deposit for corporate team-building event here or at your group's location:

$2,500.00 (non-refundable)*

(The remaining $2,500.00 is due at beginning of event.)

Price includes 2 days' materials preparation BEFORE the workshop.

--------------------

Such a casual attitude towards making a drum. "Yeah, it can be sacred, or you can just use it for a conversation piece. You can just use it for a table to put your feet up on if you fell like it."

And she is selling herself as a Native spiritual leader.
