Title: Deborah Anderson aka Chief Many Faces
Post by: White Horse on May 15, 2018, 02:38:30 pm
I have a real problem with this woman's claim that some Native elders gave her the title of Chief!

Chief Many Faces, a name given to my dear friend Deborah Anderson, whilst with the Lakota Tribe women on the Pine Ridge reservation SD, is unveiling stills from her upcoming feature documentary she shot of this powerful Native American Nation. Showing at the Leica Gallery in Los Angeles on 17th May 6-9, the exhibit will run until June 25th. It’s time we heard the real history of the Indigenous peoples of America...

I found the exhibition poster here: http://deborahanderson.com/oneofakindart/

It says there will be a "… feature documentary film about the native women that live on the Indian reservations of America". It must be possible to find more information about that film project.

Deborah Anderson, best known for her work as a photographic, film and music artist, was present at her recent opening of “Women of the White Buffalo," which is being shown in the Leica Gallery in West Hollywood.

It showcases the images of Anderson’s travels to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, home of the Oglala Lakota Nation and focuses on the women who are the backbone of the community and keepers of their ancient wisdom.

The photos include selections of traditional costumes of the tribe, beautiful scenery, landscapes and portraits of the proud women of the tribe. These photos are stills from Anderson’s upcoming feature documentary film about the native women who live on the reservations.

Anderson’s career in photography and art direction spans more than 15 years with works seen in Elle, GQ, Cosmopolitan, Vogue, Vanity Fair and campaigns for Bebe, to name a few. She also photographed some of today's famous celebrities including Elton John, Sharon Stone, Pink, Cindy Crawford and George Clooney.

Opening night brought out an array of attendees in the photography, film, fashion, art and creative industries. Many were so inspired by the exhibit's theme that they too came dressed in Native American-themed fashions.

The quote-in-quote, which I have italicized, is not from any of the two links you refer to. And nowhere can I find that Ms. Anderson herself claims that title, and especially, nowhere can I find that anyone claims that any Elders gave her such a title.

The originator of the quote seems to be artist Julian Lennon, who wrote on his Facebook page two weeks ago:

The title may have been a joke or something when she photographed at the reservation, and unfortunately Mr. Lennon referred to it in his widely read post. Seems to me you should direct your ire at Mr. Lennon and not Ms. Anderson?

Deborah Anderson's feature documentary film is the topic of a new thread started today:

What's the consensus? So far it's a title or nickname from someone else, maybe a joke. Photos that shouldn't have been taken. No evidence or even accusation of being a fraud, posing as a healer or elder, or making a profit from either.

Move to Archives, No Longer a Matter of Concern?

She is the daughter of English musician Jon Anderson, of the Prog Rock band, Yes.

Have not watched the film, but wary of yet another non-Native production featuring people we don't know, promoted by non-Natives throwing around titles like "Chief". Julian means well, but he didn't sound like he was joking. In his posts he sounded like he believed she'd been given special access and was some kind of cultural mediator or "interpreter".... which never goes well.

Looking at the Facebook page for the movie, it looks like it's non-Natives who like it. None of our Native friends have liked the page. Some Lakota friends have criticisms of some of the people involved in the film, but we're still looking into that, and waiting for more info on what they think of the production as a whole. No L/D/N people any of us know are promoting it.

Many Facebook posts are now about his involvement in his daughter’s film project.

The refernce to ’Julian’ is a comment to my suggestion here:
