My Grandparents did have an agreement that if they had a son my Grandfather could raise him in his beliefs. He was blessed with 3 daughters.

Part of the reason for the knowledge of their Native American ancestry being suppressed was the stereotypical childhood name calling of "Half Breed". To avoid discrimination they kept that heritage hush hush.

It still exists today. I being only 1/4 blood, it still makes me a point of ridicule sometimes. There are those that throw nasty remarks from both cultures, but I know that my Grandfathers wish was for someone to revive his heritage in our family is being fulfilled.
