Title: Dennis Hawk
Post by: educatedindian on August 24, 2010, 05:08:41 pm
Got a request about him.

Found him online here.
http://www.hawksounds.com/

He may or may not have Cherokee ancestry, but nothing he does seems to be Cherokee. Cherokees traditionally did not do sweats. He calls himself a descendant. So basically he's someone with likely distant Cherokee blood whose a bit clueless himself and learned likely from those posing as Lakota elders.

He's also a yoga teacher who uses some trappings he claims are Ojibwe.

PART I:
The first half of the workshop is a learning circle with the participants gathered in a circle on the floor around a buffalo robe.
What to expect:
Traditional Native American Teachings
An Introduction to Native American (Ojibwe) Medicines-Sage, Sweetgrass, Bear Root, Cedar
Smudging
Native American Songs and Drumming
Native American Story-Telling
Talking Circle

 PART II
The Second half of the workshop is a yoga practice that incorporates the teachings that were presented in the first segment of the workshop, acknowledging and honoring the seven directions. Native American flute music, drumming and chanting enhance this yoga practice.
This workshop is set up so it can be offered eight different times at the same studio. Each workshop is uniquely different from the one before. The first segment is an introduction to the seven directions and their teachings. Each of the remaining seven workshops will focus on one of the specific directions and its significance and meaning.

The Heart of a Buffalo: A Musical Drama with Dennis Hawk at Greendale, Wisconsin, United States

The Heart of a Buffalo is a 50-minute musical drama with Dennis Hawk playing the character of Black Elk, a 19th century Lakota Medicine Man who relates his childhood experience hunting buffalo in Canada in the days just after the death of chief Crazy Horse. Interlaced with the story is both traditional and original music by Dennis (Native American Drum, chanting, flute, guitar and vocals). This is a powerful and moving historical drama performed by a powerful spiritual teacher and musician. You won't want to miss this experience!

Dennis Hawk is most noted for his Native American flute playing which he incorporates in his performances, playing instruments which he has crafted himself. Through his songs, the audience will experience his strong connection with his Native American background. He is a yoga workshop leader, combining his music and his Native American heritage in his practice and instruction of yoga. He is a Cherokee / Mesquaki descendent, a pipe carrier, sweat lodge leader and teacher of Native American spirituality. Dennis is a singer / songwriter / story-teller who plays guitar and Native American flute.

I have circulated his name in the Milwaukee American Indian Community and his web-site and this is some of the feedback I got on him as well as my own.
People are willing to come forth and expose people like this now here and we are preparing a document that outlines this type of conduct and how to deal with it.
Dennis Hawk is another "Cherokee Descendent" as if that doesn’t give it all away right there, he is about as blonde as can be almost albino. He uses the fact his wife may be Stockbridge-Munsee to be able to call himself-
"a pipe carrier, sweat lodge leader and teacher of Native American spirituality." taken from his web-site.
He works with Non-Indians in the suburbs of Milwaukee where there unlikely to run into a real American Indian who will dispute what he he is doing. All his activities are Lakota based, as are many of these frauds, and he even runs a "mini-vision quest" at the Schlitz Audobon Center in Bayside, WI.
He is also a friend and compatriot to they confirmed fraud on this site: Tim Dancing Red Hawk McIntosh, which both have alot in common besides their really blonde hair, and both have the name Hawk, they also were both former Christian Pastors.
I would like to see these guys exposed in a more public way and we are coming up with a process in the Milwaukee area.
Thanks for your attention and the work you do on this site it is much needed and sought after info. Here's the comments I received about him through email from community members; and here's his site to see for yourself and Facebook page.

"Dennis Hawk is way out there as well. He told Arvol Looking Horse's wife, Paula, to watch her tongue, this is after she asked that he stop his use of sacred ways for his ego, in the pursuit of a following."

"He's even more dangerous.  Selling CDs of Lakota sweatlodge songs.  With translation and meanings.  I don't know any Natives knowledgeable enough or willing enough to do that."

"Regarding Dennis Hawk, for what it's worth, I felt that his presentation was not for real, but I didn't really have enough words to express that. I did complain to a staff person at Audubon, and suggest that they not invite him back, but they continued to hold the classes. While I was at the class, I respectfully refused to participate in the circle experience when it came my turn. I have also not gone back."

The toughest cases are the hard-core sex addicts, preying in the pulpit.  Dennis Hawk, 45, was a minister in the conservative Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, for 15 years.  He was successful and hardworking, with a wife, two children and an apparently traditional family life.  Surreptitiously, however, Hawk managed to conduct affairs with 16 women during his tenure.  Some of them were heads of powerful boards and committees within his congregation; others were simply women who were as emotionally needy as he was.  Typically, Hawk made no move unless he felt certain that his advances would not be rebuffed.  “I was the perpetrator,” he admits.  “It was authority rape on my part.”  But, he adds, “sometimes there can be two perpetrators and two victims.”

Shame eventually led Hawk to seek help through group therapy.  First, he gave up alcohol, thinking that would also solve his sexual addiction.  When it didn’t he joined a therapy group, driving 180 miles round trip every week to attend sessions in Milwaukee.  Ironically, his gradual improvement led to his exposure and expulsion from the clergy.  “I stood up to two women I hadn’t slept with for two years, but who were still wielding control in the church because they had the goods on the pastor,” he says.  One of the women, Hawk now believes, “organized the church against me and then played the victim.”

Nice work Epiphany....but this is also very disturbing.  A sex addict gets forced off his pulpit for his activities and he goes into administering counseling and teaching workshops on spirituality?

Very disturbing....

That kind of clergy abuse is more akin to incest than stranger rape, as the minister is often a father-figure to the abused. In the very statement where he admits to this crime he also blames his victims. That's not someone who has learned from their mistakes, that's not someone who is truly making amends.

I want to hear what the victims have to say. My opinion is he has lost the right to be in any position of spiritual authority, ever again.  I don't think he should be allowed among women and children unsupervised.  Too many Christian denominations simply relocate predator priests and ministers, and we've seen how that's worked out for them. This guy makes me sick.

Trial begins for therapist
Oshkosh Northwestern - Oshkosh, Wis.

A Winnebago County jury will determine whether a Neenah therapist inappropriately kissed and touched a patient or if his actions were part of an accepted method of therapy.

Dennis G. Hawk, 62, is charged with sexual exploitation by a therapist, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 12 years, six months in prison and a $25,000 fine.

Hawk is currently not eligible to practice in Wisconsin.

A two-day jury trial began Monday before Winnebago County Circuit Court Judge Barbara Key with opening statements and testimony from witnesses.

Fond du Lac County District Attorney Thomas Storm, who has been appointed as a special prosecutor in the case, told the jury of 11 women and two men that the 43-year-old Neenah woman had been a patient of Hawk's since 2003 and that Hawk kissed her on at least three different occasions in addition to touching her inappropriately during a January 2006 counseling session.

"It wasn't like they were social acquaintances out on a date," Storm said during his opening statement. "It was in the context of therapy."

However, defense attorney Nila Robinson told the jury she would present testimony that will show that Hawk's actions during the woman's therapy sessions were part of an accepted method of therapy.

Robinson said not all forms of therapy consist of sitting in chairs and talking and that the action in question was a way to relieve stress and anxiety.

"I think the evidence will show that when you look at it in the context of everything else that was going on, there was nothing inappropriate at all," Robinson said.

According to the criminal complaint, the Neenah woman had been attending counseling sessions with Hawk at Fox Valley Counseling, 307 S. Commercial St., Neenah, since the winter of 2003.

The woman told investigators Hawk touched her inappropriately on four separate occasions and that when she confronted him in February 2006, Hawk acknowledged he had touched her inappropriately and suffered from a sex addiction, the complaint states.

There was a jury trial State of Wisconsin vs. Dennis G Hawk
Winnebago County Case Number 2006CF000830 , charge was Sexual Exploitation by Therapist, he pled not guilty and was then found not guilty by jury.

Then a civil case Winnebago County Case Number 2007CV001109, personal injury case. A female plaintiff.  Dennis Hawk, Fox Valley Counseling, and an insurance company all defendants. Ultimately that case dismissed, don't know what happened before dismissal.

Case search can be done here: http://wcca.wicourts.gov/index.xsl (http://wcca.wicourts.gov/index.xsl) His first and last names bring up the records.

Their website needs to be updated. This Circle of Life Inc is still publicized on the website, but it's status as of 12/11/2012 is "administratively dissolved".

Quote
Circle of Life, Incorporated is a non-profit corporation led by founders Dennis and Cyndi Hawk. Both Dennis and Cyndi are of Native American heritage. Dennis is Cherokee / Mesquakie and Cyndi is Mohican. Together they have followed the spiritual path of Native American people, (the Red Road) for more than fifteen years.

As founders of Circle of Life, Inc., they have recognized the need for a spiritual environment that is healing and accepting, and that connects people with Creator as well as creation.

Wow is all I have to say, this guy is more ridiculous then I could have imagined and thanks for the information on him. It looks like he has always been a predator and started out doing it as a Lutheran Minister and got caught and moved on to the counseling field, he also got caught acting innapropriately there and left that field to pursue a Native American spiritual leader persona. I think he is just out there looking for vulnerable people to take advantage of, especially women, since he keeps claiming a sexual addiction. I also got feedback that the Stockbridge Munsee community in Wisconsin "ran him out" or their community. Milwaukee will look to do the same.
I would like to see him listed as a fraud so people can beware of him.

I recently witnessed Dennis Hawk do his presentation titled "The Heart of a Buffalo".  Dennis Hawk takes on and "transforms" into Black Elk.  Right off the bat, this did  not sit well with me.  How can someone "become" such a spiritual leader like Black Elk?  He would jump back and forth between characters (himself and Black Elk).  He would say, "now I'm Dennis Hawk, Now I'm Black Elk, I can do that because I am Black Elk". It would have been better had he just shared the factual information about Black Elk, rather than try to pretend to be him!!! He most certainly comes across as being an expert on Black Elk and the Lakota culture.  There were also several wrong historical references made!  Now after reading about his sexual addictions, my creep factor was validated.  From my opinion, Dennis Hawk perpetuates Native American stereotypes!

We look forward to returning to this beautiful studio for our regular third-Saturday kirtan. We can't wait to sing with you all!

This time we will have a special guest for kirtan: Dennis Hawk from Wisconsin. His bio is below. He will bring some of his flutes and CDs for sale.

Blankets and chairs will be provided, as well as song sheets. A love donation is much appreciated, we suggest a similar amount that you would pay for a yoga asana class, about $10 - 15.

Yes he's a very dangerous guy and I'm still waiting for the moderators here to move him into the Frauds section. He is also now working with known fraud Tim Dancing Red Hawk McIntosh, in the suburbs of Milwaukee and neighboring counties.

The Nanaboozho Legends of the Ojibwe: What These Stories Tell us about Nature and Spirituality Today

Tuesday, September 10 from 7:00 – 8:30pm

Dennis Hawk will explore some of the ancient Ojibwe Stories showing their application in today’s world of science and nature. Interesting blog in that Dennis Hawk tries to defend what was written about him in this forum and he finally identifies his teachers as: Cleveland CJ Doxtater, Oneida, WI, who was taught by Basil Braveheart, Lakota from Pine Ridge.
From what I seen they both seem.questionable as to what they know and who they will teach

My mother was born Ellen Lee Marie Willis.
Her mother was a Guthrie from Scotts-Irish Cherokee descent.

This info helps a lot, his claim is through his mother. So far according to the records I see, she and her people are listed as white.

Quote
There was a fairly large group of Scotts-Irish Cherokee who made their way from the Oklahoma Reservation prior to and during the Civil War.
Some of the Southern Cherokee owned slaves and the tribe sided with the South during the  Civil War.
In protest (and fear for their lives) my Scotts-Irish Cherokee ancestors made their way to St. Joseph, MO.

Quote
There's actually a street on the south-side of St. Joseph, MO called Cherokee Street.

There are streets, town, counties, etc. named Cherokee. That does not mean everyone present are actually Cherokee.

The Guthrie name is still prominent on the rolls of the Southern Cherokee.

As far as blood quantum goes who knows?
The Scotts-Irish had been intermarrying with the Cherokee since the 1600's

The Cherokee didn't make much of blood quantum however.

John Ross, the principle chief and hero during the Trail of Tears when the Cherokee were force-marched from their homes in North Carolina and Georgia was only 1/8 Cherokee.  He would not have qualified for an "Indian Card" today.

Cherokee Nation membership requirements: http://www.cherokee.org/Services/TribalCitizenship/Citizenship.aspx

John Ross http://www.cherokee.org/AboutTheNation/History/Chiefs/JohnRoss.aspx

John Ross served his people as Principal Chief. Dennis Hawk, on the other hand, looks to be just serving himself.

His mother's people did move to St. Joseph, Missouri. They and their ancestors are always listed white in records. Many people are researching these lines, I see family trees and info on Ancestry, Family Search, and Find a Grave. Actual records are plentiful too. No one other than Dennis Gilbert Hawk is claiming Cherokee.

His maternal grandmother and her parents:

Right. And all the kids who stayed with the white side of the family and assimilated, their generations upon generations of descendants are all white now. They've grown up white, raised by white parents and grandparents, with full white privilege and totally white culture. Then as adults these folks do their family trees and find a distant ancestor, and they become pretendians. No Native community claims them.

Their comparisons to tribes with no or low-BQ requirements are specious, as those communities, when they are real tribes and not fake ones, are based in culture and kinship. It's a false equivalency. These people with maybe a distant ancestor who assimilated are not culturally Native, and Native people know it. They'll only fool racist and/or ignorant nons with that stuff. Then again, non-Natives are their community and their marketplace. They do this assuming no NDNs will ever find out about it. They do this assuming that if the white people in their community/marketplace find out real NDNs disapprove, they'll be too racist to care. They prefer pretendians. Because pretendians sell them the romantic fantasies they crave.

Even though members of the WI Native community confronted Dennis Hawk about his appropriation and he promised to end it, it looks like he can't stop using Native symbolism and images in his music, I guess anything to make a buck?

Did you know? Several years ago I produced an album of Native American chants, Lakota and Ojibwe. I did it for our lodge, but it has become my most popular cd. If you hold sweat lodges and want your group to sing well, have them obtain the album and all of you sing with your hearts. I loved the singing in our lodge that came from giving everyone the music. www.dennishawkyogamusic.com

Interesting, how he writes about himself semi-honest, but can't be honest about appropriating other cultures, as he has personas and professions.

"This is where I am going:  I have had wonderful spiritual journeys in my lifetime.  I started the journey as a Lutheran, --even becoming a minister for them.  (My degree from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis says that I have a Masters of Divinity).  I think that is the strangest degree on the face of Mother Earth.  "OK, now I've mastered God, what's next?"  I spent 20 years as a community organizer and inner-city minister in Milwaukee.  I did that until my addictions caught up with me--and I zipped up north to Neenah, Wisconsin.  The geographical cure didn't take so then it was off to treatment (several).  To quote a politician that I didn't particularly care for (Ronald Reagan),"If you open a door and all you see is horse shit, start digging 'cause there's a pony in there somewhere."  So, I became an addictions counselor and switched spiritual paths.  That's when I met and sat at the feet of some great people (elders and teachers) whom I admire and hold dear to my heart.  This part of my journey is the focus of this blog.  (I'm now a yoga musician and you can find all about that on my website listed above.)"
