Pokanoket & Chappaquiddick Wampanoag Tribes
« on: July 11, 2006, 06:17:38 pm »
Received some concerned emails about these groups. If you know about them, or know people who could clear this up, let us know.

-----
http://www.geocities.com/pokanoket_tribe/WELCOMEPAGE.html"http://www.geocities.com/pokanoket_tribe/WELCOMEPAGE.html
"The Pokanoket have been working on becoming a fully Federally recognized tribe. It has also been established through archealogical findings, that the Pokanoket have been living in Rhode Island for a lot longer than was originally thought. We hope to achieve Federal recognition within the next year or two. "
----
They are willing to enroll PODIAs or POVDIAs ( people of VERY distant Indian ancestry.) There seems to be some uncertainty if any of these people even was Indian .

Some very questionable oral traditon recorded in the 1930's claims this guy Josiah Bearse b. late 1600's on Cape Cod was mixed blood .

Some very questionable oral tradition also claims Josiah had a bunch of illegitimate children with Mary Sissle (records showing he was legally married to someone else.)

Mary Sissle was a descendant of the famous Wampanoag leader Massasoit or Ousamaquin who lived in the 1600's. Without getting into the debate whether these children actually decended from Mary Sissle, they were born between 1718 - 1741, meaning, any people who might have some Native blood from this family , have very little Native blood from this family, if any.

Below are some posts from people involved in this would be tribe discussing this questionable genealogy and the tribes enrollement policies ;

I think she is going to fax them to me, but with the pow wow back there last weekend and mine here last weekend, we have not connected as of yet. it may be faster to request an application through her email.... <sachemwildfire@aol.com> in the subject be sure to put POKANOKET APPLICATION

Debi and others,
I got the papers from Sacem Linda. She brought them to the reunion. If anyone wants them, send me you snail mail address or FAX #. You must be a descendant of Mary Sissell to qualify

from Sharon Satterfield

"I have been researching Franklyn for over a year, keep getting small corroboration, haven't found anything to refute him."

(Note: Franklin Bearse being the source of the story Mary Sissle was the common law wife of Josiah Bearse and mother of his kids . )

"All his other points except Austin being a gypsy have been documented by tribal historians, for instance, thePokanokets. They won't give you the information, however. I am in the tribe and they are pretty careful about what they tell me."

From Sharon Satterfield

We need to find out if the Mashpee Wampanoag consider Mary Hyanno to be the wife of Austin or any other Bearse connections. When Josiah supposedly lived with Mary Sissell, it was at Mashpee, about 1718-1741.

i think it was sharon who found the record in NY not too long ago that listed him among the praying indians there. also, the mary sissel/ bearce part is documented through sachem linda's records.

i encourage all of you Joseph/Mary Sissel desc. to get your Pokanoket
applications in soon. it would be a shame to miss out on that- the rolls are
closing.

From Sharon Satterfield

Ok. just back from the Mashpee Archives... nothing there on Mary Sissell, but there was a folder on Bearse with the same things we already have. a very skimpy folder!!

Sharon
------------------------------------

In the posts above , it's claimed Sachem Linda has the records.

I also see in one of the above posts it is now it is Joseph and Mary Sissle, before it was Josiah. And although Sachem Linda supposedly has the records, everyone else in her tribe appears to be still looking for them. If Sachem Linda had the records she was not sharing them. Why?

A source that will remain anonymous for now, alleged to be a fraud and a totally unreliable source says the real Pokanoket band is "The Council of Seven/Royal House of Pokanoket/Pokanoket Tribe/Wampanoag Nation ".

Their web page.

This organization seems to be headed by Michael "White Eagle Deer" Weeden as president or maybe, William "winds of Thunder" Guy , Sachem.

Some other names on the council
Clifford "Lion Heart" Guy
Clifford "Firelight" Soucy

And the Chappaquidick Wampanoags, there seems to be two groups.

-----
First one seems to be led by Linda Morceau .

Told this women is associated with Linda Elderkin - Degnan .

http://www.chappiquiddic.org/index.html
"We are direct decendants of George Sams-Sassamon. He was one of the medicine men of the tribal band known today as Chappiquiddic. He was among the first Praying Indians along with Blind Amos Payne. Our family names are Simpson,Sipson,Sampson,Sams, and originally Sassamon, and also Freeman,Joel,Joab,Peirce and Payne . Our genealogical tie to George Sams is through Zadock and Sarah Simpson who were listed on the 1849 Briggs Report and 1861 Earl Report as Chappiquiddic Indians. This is the official census of native americans living in Massachusetts,USA at that time. This document is used to determine American Indian Lineage in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts."

http://www.chappiquiddic.org/custom2.html

Sachem - Linda"YellowFeather"Morceau

Sub-Chief - Edward"GhostBear" McKenna

Tribal Secretary - Patricia"ButterflyMorningSong" LeBlanc

Council Chief - Billy"RunningBuck"McWalter

Council War Chief - Andrew"SoaringMoonEagle" Morceau "

Elders Council Advisor - Johnny"SilverCloud"Winslow

Fire Keeper - Sean"QuietStandingWolf" Morceau

Tribal High Elder - Annie"SoaringButterfly"McKenna

Historian - Diana"Strong Woman"Lawless

Council Elders-Winnie"Quiet Heart"McWalter

Mary"Gentle Rain"Smith

-----
http://www.chappaquiddick-wampanoag.org/
"In 1995, the Tribal leaders formed a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, The Chappaquiddick Tribe Of The Wampanoag Indian Nation, Corp., to handle the Tribe's political, economic, and cultural interests. The elected Tribal Council meets monthly to advance cultural activities and concerns important to Chappaquiddick Wampanoags."
-----
Then there is the Chappiquiddic band/tribe (note the slightly different spelling ) Both are on Marthas Vineyard off Cape Cod . The link to the Chappiquiddic band/tribe, below is headed by aforementioned Linda Morceau .

And it gets more confusing.
-----
Seems Linda Elderkin might want a casino.

http://www.anchorrising.com/barnacles/002719.html
"State representives Raymond Gallison (D-Bristol/Portsmouth), Fausto Anguilla (D-Bristol/Warren), Jan Malik (D-Barrington/Warren), Edwin Pacheco (D-Burrillville/Glocester), and William San Bento (D-North providence/Pawtucket) have introduced a bill to the Rhode Island House titled a Joint Resolution Giving State Recognition for the Pokanoket Tribe of the Wampanoag Nation
2. The Chief of the the Pokanoket Wampanoags has, in the past, expressed an interest in becomming involved in building a casino in Rhode Island. Here is Jim Baron from the March 26, 2002 issue of the Kent County Times Asserting that "no single Indian tribe in Rhode Island should enjoy any
advantage over the other in their desire to build a casino, " two Wampanoag officials say they support a special commission to study gaming in Rhode Island, the same one vigorously resisted by the Narragansett Indians Chief Wilfred "Eagle Heart" Greene of the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe and Chief Linda "Wild Fire" Elderkin-Degnan of The Pokanoket\Wampanoag Federation issued a joint press release Monday in favor of the Fox
commission. Chief Elderkin-Degnan, who called the House study commission "a positive and significant first step in addressing the casino gaming issue," said that the House Finance Committee "has a responsibility to ensure any proposed casino gaming includes all Native American tribes in Rhode Island."

The answer from Paul Weeden of the Royal house.

"Here we go again. Individuals of hardness of heart and sleezy actions attemting to confuse society. There is only one Pokanoket Tribe and they are based in Bristol,Rhode Island. They are anti-casino. I know because I, Paul A. Weeden was Council President for many years. Other individuals have attemted to misrepresent themselves by misrepresenting to be the Pokanoket. Why is it many individuals who proclaim to be Pokanoket have never given any genealogy documentation to the Pokanoket Federal Acknowledge Office proving that they are indeed Pokanoket or Native
American Period. Again there is only one Pokanoket Tribe. How can individuals claim to have a Pokanoket Federation without the Pokanoket Tribe. The thought of becoming rich by owning a casino does many different things to an individual. Ever sincerely, Paul A. Weeden Deerfoot of
Pokanoket
Posted by paul weeden at February 17, 2006 03:04 PM"
------
A search on Paul Weeden, spokesperson orator for the Royal Pokanoket tribe shows a connection with the Seaconke Wampanoag tribe.

http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:dQ1GGYj1yGQJ:kalel40.tripod.com/index.html+% 22Paul+Weeden%22+Wampanoag&hl=en&gl=ca&ct=clnk&cd=1&ie=UTF-8
"That night Paul was interesting and he had his brother with him. He talked about something I had never heard of before, Federal Recognition. This was to become a word I would here over and over again in the course of the next year. Paul talked about how he was given the blessing of Princess Red Wing. He intended to use that blessing to rebuild the Royal House of Pokanoket. He said that we all would have a role to play. There was a lot of excitement in the air and there were meetings after and between the meetings, for the first time in a long time our family was spending time together"
------
The Seaconke Wampanoag tribe appears to be another tribe that is not federally recognized, but in this area it is hard to know if this lack of recognition is deserved or not, as Mashpee so obviously deserves this recognition but has repeatedly had this denied.

http://seaconkewampanoagtribe.net/

http://seaconkewampanoagtribe.net/id2.html
------
"Citizenship is based strictly on genealogy, and it is completely up to the applying person to prove to the satisfaction of the elders that he or she is genealogicly connected. A Citizen is someone who has a genealogical connection to and approved clan in the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe. A member is someone who may or may not have native genealogy but in no genealogical way has a connection to the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe. "
-----
Princess Red Wing was mentioned as having given Paul Weeden her blessing.
-----
http://www.projo.com/specials/women/97story4.htm
"Born in Lisbon, Conn., Red Wing was one of seven children of Walter and Hannah (Weeden) Glasko. The family moved to the village of Harrisville, where Walter managed a farm and raised the family. Red Wing was taught that her family descended from the Ninigret line of the Narragansett tribe, as well as the Wampanoags. But Weeden, a second cousin to Red Wing, says his research traces their lineage to the Mashantucket Pequot line. "
"Regardless of her exact roots, she was regarded as an expert in Native American matters."
"Everett Weeden of Charlestown recalls a woman who wasn't technically a princess but rose to legendary status in the tribe and in the non-Indian world. "She spoke in these poetic verses at times because she was part of that generation when everything was poetry and pageantry,"said Weeden, who was given the Indian name Tall Oak by Red Wing when he was 16. "
------

Not sure if this Pokanoket Royal House is credible or not.
Still uncertain if these people are who they say they are, or if they are recognized by the rest of the Wampanoag Nation. There are Weedens in Princeses Red WIngs family who are not sure if they are Narragaset/Wampanoag or Mashantucket Pequot , and there is no mention of the Massasoit Wampanoag family, but maybe that is through another familiy line .

As for Linda Elderkin -Degnan

More on her tribes search for the genealogy below ( Some Native people in the area do have the name Elderkin, but so do many non native people so just the surname proves nothing )

"Cousins,
I went to the New England Historical Genealogical Library, the Freetown, MA Historical Society, Plymouth Public Library, Plimoth Plantation, and Sachem Linda's in the last two days, not a small feat given the monsoon weather. Linda claims to have proof of the Bearse Sissel connection. I couldn't find it at the Historical Society, but (con....) "

Wow I'm not at all surprised at the white supremacist comments I've read here on this message board about the Chief Wind Thunder of the Pokanoket Nation wow it's really so ridiculous it makes me laugh and it's not at all funny in all reality. But when it comes to the idiocy of hidden racist and yes I said hidden due to the fact that white supremacy have buried itself deep into the modern day native American tribal community no different then it has in the Mexican community. What I am very surprised at is that the very people most likely making these white devil comments are probably and most likely of mixed white and native American blood themselves. Yet they have the gauls to make racist comments without knowing absolutely nothing of Chief Wind Thunder of the Pokanoket Nation nor his personal native family tree. Yet I haven't seen nor heard any tribal board members arguing about the pale skinned blonde and red haired white native mixed blood living with and on native land reservations. Yet they are cohabiting and marrying into native families across this country and it these peoples in my conscious opinion who are the very mixed breed natives who have created and contributed to a broken circle of division amongst the tribes and are continuing this racist mission and agenda of division between black and brown natives. I'll challenge anyone to do your own research that the original indigenous native Amerindians were of dark complexion and by the first colonist which were the Spanish who considered the dark indigenous native a black people deemed the word Negro coined by the Spanish conquistadors and first colonizers....Now I could mention a bunch of books I've read, researched and studied that are accredited by academic archaeologist, anthropologist, scholars and historians. But I refuse to waste my precious time on anyone who is ignorant of academic evidence and historical based truth... So I'll end on this note if anyone would like to continue this conscious post in a intelligent discussion join me please on my live podcast I do every Sunday at 3:0'clock pm PST on "The BlackVillage Community Podcast" sponsored by Spreaker.com Oh and don't worry its toll free it wont cost you a dime just a bit of your conscious time is all. web link: http://www.spreaker.com/show/the-blackvillage-community-podcast

AB also calls himself Jaycee or Afrodesiac Blackbonez, and moderates a Nuage forum with faux Native, faux Egyptian, faux leftist, and Black supremacist nonsense posing as African traditions.

Apparently AB won't waste time on learning basic spelling or word definitions. We certainly don't have any "gauls." Why would we keep ancient Frenchmen around?  ::)

Your trolling and deep racism has mostly gotten a lot of yawns, in addition to amusement at your ignorance. Even  few moments would have told you we have Black members, members with Black spouses, and people of just about any background you care to name. We've long debunked the Black supremacist faux history you are gullible enough to fall for.  Saddest thing, in addition to your anti Native and anti white racism, is your self hating racism, your genocide denial. Someone Black denying the Atlantic slave trade is as delusional and self hating as a Jew denying the Holocaust.

Do you have anything besides racist trolling, anything to add about either of these alleged tribes? So far it seems to be people trying to claim they are a tribe based on thin claims of an ancestor 350 years ago. A lot of this we've seen before, insisting on not being called their legal name, always being photographed in regalia.
