Urgent! Leonard needs a diabetes test kit now!
« on: June 28, 2008, 01:24:13 pm »
Just passing this on for those who may wish to help here....

Urgent! Leonard needs a diabetes test kit now!

You may recall that Leonard suffers from diabetes. To date,
his diabetes has been managed by diet but this is difficult to do
when the prison won't give Leonard a test kit by which to monitor
his blood glucose level. Two weeks ago, I wrote to the warden at
Lewisburg asking that Leonard be given a diabetes test kit. I even
offered to purchase an approved kit if the prison cannot provide one.
I haven't received a response from the warden.

Yesterday, Leonard called--later than the norm. He's suffering
with a severe headache and other symptoms and is in a bad way.
When he was finally able to get tested at the prison infirmary, his
blood sugar measured 300. The highest blood glucose reading should
be less than 180 mg/dL (and that only one to two hours after eating).

We have to see to it that Leonard gets a diabetes test kit so that
he can control his diabetes. All supporters are urgently requested
to contact:

Warden
USP Lewisburg
US Penitentiary

Lewisburg, PA 17837
Phone: 570-523-1251
Fax: 570-522-7745
E-mail: LEW/EXECASSISTANT@BOP.GOV

Also contact:

Harley G. Lappin, Director
Federal Bureau of Prisons

Telephone: 202-307-3198

Be respectful, but firm. The situation is life threatening. After
many years of high blood sugar, Leonard is at serious risk for kidney
failure and the need for dialysis, blood vessel damage in the eyes
that can lead to blindness, and nerve damage in the feet that could
lead to the need for amputation. Supporters should also remember
that Leonard already suffers from a heart condition. Heart disease
is, in fact, the number one cause of death in people with diabetes.

Leonard needs our help. Act now. Write or fax a letter. Make a
call. Send an e-mail. Keep doing it until Leonard gets a diabetes
test kit.

Thank you.

Dear Friends and Supporters,
The U.S. penitentiary at Lewisburg is in lockdown for the fifth consecutive day. Lockdowns, especially those that last a long while, are dangerous. Why? First, it's common for Leonard not to receive his medications at such times. Second, the prison has told all of us that Leonard has access to a diabetes testing kit in the infirmary. Right? Unfortunately, during a lockdown, Leonard isn't allowed to go to the infirmary at all. There's no way for him to test his blood glucose level.

Please help us ensure that Leonard receives proper medical care.

1. Leonard must receive his medications as prescribed.

2. Leonard also still needs access to a diabetes testing kit. Leonard
should be allowed his own kit at the pharmacy for accurate readings, as well as easy and regular access. In this way, he'll be able to test himself three or four times a day and hopefully achieve a balanced blood glucose level.

3. Leonard needs diabetic shoes that will help him with his diabetes-related foot problems.

If the prison cannot provide a kit and/or a proper pair of shoes, the family will work with an approved medical supply company to see to it that Leonard gets what he needs.

All supporters are requested to continue to contact:

Amnesty International considers Leonard Peltier a "political prisoner" who should be "immediately and unconditionally released." Leonard Peltier, now a great-grandfather, is a citizen of the Anishinabe and Dakota/Lakota Nations and a tireless advocate for Indigenous Rights. A participant in the American Indian Movement, he went to assist the Oglala Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the mid-1970s where, on June 26, 1975, a tragic shoot out occurred. He was wrongfully convicted in the
deaths of two agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has been illegally incarcerated since 1976. Federal prosecutors have twice admitted before the Courts of Appeal that they don't know who fired the fatal shots. The government also has admitted that it isn't known what role Leonard Peltier "may have played" in the incident. Since his politically motivated prosecution and conviction, proof of fabricated and suppressed evidence, as well as coerced testimony, has been uncovered. The Courts of Appeal have repeatedly acknowledged investigative and prosecutorial misconduct in this case, but have failed to take corrective action. A model prisoner, Leonard continues to maintain his innocence and has conseqently been denied fair consideration for parole. Join with numerous internationally recognized human rights organizations, civil rights leaders,  celebrities and other luminaries who have called for the immediate release of Leonard Peltier. Time to set him free... Because it is the RIGHT thing to do.

Dear Supporters,
Great news!
No more phone calls, letters or e-mails are needed.  We heard from Leonard this morning.  He now has his own diabetes testing kit in the infirmary. He also is receiving his medications as prescribed.  He asked me to thank all of you for your care and concern and for taking such strong action on his behalf.

Is there anything else he needs? Instead of a barrage of mail he can't possbily answer, if you have a direct line to him and know his needs could you post them here? Thanks.
