Gowa Peshewa - Doc Macaki Peshewa relative?

(1/3) > >>

Bahesmama:
Anyone know if this Gowa Peshewa who was recently featured in Tribal Business News (https://tribalbusinessnews.com/sections/entrepreneurism/13753-neon-moon-to-spotlight-indigenous-roots-of-cowboy-culture-celebrate-native-artists) is any relation to late Dr. Macaki Peshewa of the fake Tennessee Indian Council?

There was a thread here about Macaki Peshewa AKA Jerry Dills. Here is his obituary: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/knoxnews/name/macaki-peshewa-obituary?id=14101721

We couldn't find any ties between Gowa and his children. She was born in 1991 and has apparently scrubbed personal information off the internet. We think this is her legal name because she received a federal PPP loan under that name.

Gowa Peshewa hopes to educate her community about Native American topics and create a safe place for Native people with her new Neon Moon coffee saloon concept, which she bills as a social enterprise. Our Tribal Business News affiliate has the story.

The comments are mostly very critical as to Gowa Peshewa's claims of being Shawnee. The article itself has been edited:

--- Quote ---EDITOR’S NOTE: In an initial interview for this story, Gowa Peshewa said she was a Shawnee woman. She later clarified to Tribal Business News that she is not a member of any federally recognized Shawnee tribe, but does come from mixed Indigenous ancestry.

Then I found a Facebook Page called "Fake Indian Blog Fans": https://www.facebook.com/fakeindians/

They also have a website: https://ancestorstealing.blogspot.com/

At the Facebook page, I found this post: https://www.facebook.com/fakeindians/posts/2948663302113113

Gowa Peshewa is not Shawnee nor does she have Native American ancestry.   She is a granddaughter to Macaki Peshewa who was a part of the Fake group calling themselves "United Remnant Band of Shawnee in Ohio" founded by the well known fraud,  Jerry "Hawk" Pope.

If correct, that will answer this question:

Bahesmama:
Wow! Thanks! How do they get themselves featured so quickly? And how could a Navajo journalist not ask the right questions?

My bolding. In my previous post here, I forgot to point to that thread, which is here:

I don't know the answers to these questions. I will note that the article you linked to in the first post was published January 10, 1922. Some weeks before that, on December 2, 2021, Gowa Peshewa was featured in another no-guestions-asked article:

https://wpln.org/post/a-forthcoming-native-american-owned-coffee-shop-hopes-to-make-it-easier-to-support-indigenous-communities/

--- Quote ---A forthcoming Native American-owned coffee shop hopes to make it easier to support indigenous communities
Nashville is slated to get a new Native American-owned coffee shop and marketplace, called Neon Moon. Its mission is to make supporting the indigenous community as easy as buying a cup of coffee.

It’s the project of an East Nashvillian, who’s well known by her first name alone — Gowa.

Two links in there: https://neonmoonnashville.com/ [NEON MOON Local Indigenous Initiative]

--- Quote ---where we’re going
Neon Moon began as an idea to bring indigenous representation to the industries of our local community in Nashville, TN. What started as a fundraising campaign, grew into a bootstrapping business plan for a coffee shop, and has since been reworked into something more “recession proof”.

Thanks to the generous support and patience from our community, we have continued to provide accessibility to coffee beans from indigenous farmers through e-commerce and local businesses. As we realized that without investors - there was a slim chance of surviving the oversaturated coffee house market in music city, we also witnessed so many legendary and heroic local businesses forced to close their doors during and post pandemic.

After a lot of thought and communication with our local small business community, we realized leasing out a building from a developer without investors was not a sustainable idea, and that the core of the mission has to be focused on owning our own land for Tennessee and future generations of our indigenous youth. Through the early phase of fundraising, to second phase of operating as e-commerce and local coffee sales, we are working towards obtaining our own property to include land for indigenous stewardship.

With a focus on protecting the land from development, and nurturing a cyclical nature with the local ecosystem, the land will eventually provide elements necessary for small agriculture opportunities like indigenous farming techniques and animal rescue. The next phase of our initiative will be to own land, to become regenerative and fully sustainable. Not only will we be creating a home for cyclical nature with the land, but we have plans on how we will continue to provide opportunities for indigenous representation in the music and entertainment industries we work in.

Also Gowa Peshewa's Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/gowagram/ (Looks much like a fashion show.)

Exactly what kind of "indigenous representation" and how "supporting the indigenous community" will take place I cannot find specified anywhere in these websites (unless it's hidden in obscure ways in the Instagram site). — Is it a scam?
